Omar Ali prepares for a big innings in 'More Than a Game' - BBC 1 Midlands (2004)

Directions

FROM M6

Leave M6 at junction 6 – Spaghetti junction

This is the A38, Aston Expressway. Follow signs to City Centre.

As you approach the city, keep in the centre/right hand lane and take the flyover which snakes off to the right and then into Queensway tunnel.

When you come out of the tunnel, you need to get into the left hand carriageway – do not go into the next tunnel which you see ahead.

Follow the road up the hill, round and under some municipal buildings. Under these, get into the middle lane. Take the second exit left into Broad Street (not counting a small road next to the Town Hall that feeds into this road system).

On Broad Street you will go past the Hyatt Hotel on your left and the Birmingham Reparatory theatre and International Convention Centre on your right. Keep going straight for about half a mile – go under the next tunnel.

You will emerge on to the Hagley Road. Keep going straight for about three miles.

On the Hagley Road, you will go past Norfolk Road, Gillot Road, Stanmore Road and Fountain Road on your right – and three main traffic light systems.

The 13th right off Hagley Road is Sandon Road. This is a fork and there is a feeder lane to turn into it. There is a wooded/green area in front of this. Once on Sandon Road take the third left, which is Poplar Road (Do not get mixed up with Poplar Avenue which is on your right).

Once on Poplar Road, 114a is at the far end, just before you get to the shops and Bearwood High Street.

We are behind a row of terraced houses with a very narrow drive into the back. You may park in there but come in straight rather than at an angle otherwise you will scratch your car. Getting out is tricky if you’re not used to it but we can help you with that.

Alternatively park on the street. There is a 2-hour restriction until 6pm. After that it’s Residents Parking only.

FROM M40 / M5

Drive up the M40 and join the M42 signposted towards M5 (Worcester).

After J1 of the M42 stay on your left and take the flyover – signposted M5 North – and join the M5 going North.

Leave M5 at J3 and turn right onto the A456 to Birmingham. After about a mile you will go under and underpass. You are now on the Hagley Road heading into Birmingham.

Stay on this road – go straight over first set of lights – past a park on your left.

Go straight over the 2nd set of lights. There are now some shops and a petrol pump on tour left.

Very soon after that take the first extreme left on to Anderson Road.

Take the first left. This is Poplar Road. A few doors down after turning onto Poplar Road is 114a.
